Shawn Lewis in front of ELCC

I'm proud of the record I've established of getting things done and keeping my promises to you. Even when I haven't been able to keep a promise, it has not been for a lack of trying, but the realities of budgets and being only 1 of 15 votes on Council.

As I seek a second term as your Ward 2 Councillor, I'm not going to make grandiose promises I cannot keep.  I'm not going to pretend I can fix the problems that are outside the jurisdiction of a municipal government, that need to be tackled by the Ontario or Federal governments.

My commitment to you is that I will continue the work I have started to deliver on the practical things that need attention in our neighbourhood, from infrastructure renewal on things like roads and sewers, to improving connectivity and the ability of everyone to get around whether by car, bike, transit, or as a pedestrian, and helping our area grow and prosper with new housing options and new business and jobs attraction.

  • We've got a lot done in the past 4 years, but there is always more to do.  Whitehall Dr. needs to be completely rebuilt from the underground services to a new road surface with proper curbs and gutters.  Wexford Ave needs to be repaved. The work to renew Dundas St. needs to continue to be pushed.  I will continue to push to make sure that infrastructure renewal in east London remains a priority for our roads and water-wastewater divisions,
  • Community Safety needs to be taken seriously, London is big city and it's a growing city. In 2021 alone we grew by 10% and are now over 420,000 people.  Response times for police calls are too long, and city council needs to work with police to ensure they have proper staffing levels for our population size, that means hiring 100 more officers,
  • I will work with both private and non-profit sector partners to bring infill opportunities and redevelopment of vacant land in Ward 2, to see new housing options for those who want to call our neighbourhood home in locations like the old Bowlerama and the former St. Roberts school properties,
  • Develop an opportunity for London to participate in the creation of "rent-to-own housing" under the new federally funded program, developing a new way for families to be able to reach homeownership in our community,
  • I will continue the work council has started to do OUR PART to tackle the homelessness issue, AND I will be a voice on Council to push the Ontario government to do it's part and provide the mental health and addiction treatment beds necessary to get people struggling with these problems off the street,
  • Working with the Argyle Business Improvement Association (BIA), I will be a strong voice at council to make sure our Community Improvement Plan (CIP) isn't short changed and gets the same level of respect and funding that similar plans in other business districts have received from city hall. It can't be all about the downtown all the time,
  • Work to establish a Parks & Recreation Capital Reserve fund, so that when park repairs or upgrades are needed, a source of funding is in place,
  • Deliver on the long overdue Green Bin program that was sidelined by COVID supply chain issues,
  • Continue to work with Tourism London to capitalize on the economic opportunities from our city's UNESCO designation as a "City of Music" and the newly created London Film Office to attract more production and entertainment sector opportunities to our community,
  • And most importantly I will continue to engage with constituents, by email, by social media, and in person, to listen to your concerns and ideas for our neighbourhood and our city and will be honest and upfront with you about what can and cannot be done!
