Facing an awkward political problem, council voted overwhelmingly to let a plot of east-end land that’s home to a community-built war monument stand as Vimy Ridge Park temporarily…

That pleased the community members who’ve maintained the green space in the shadow of the Charley Fox overpass. It also lets council sidestep the ugly possibility of having nowhere to celebrate the legendary battle’s 100th anniversary, next month…

…Shawn Lewis, an east-end community member who helped build the upstart Vimy monument, said he accepts council’s compromise.

“Obviously we would have preferred to have had the designation to be permanent,” he said, “but the temporary designation council gave for Vimy Ridge Park is a win for common sense.”
